1/4" Scale Model for Hamlet, by William Shakespeare
Thrust Stage
This highly conceptual design for Hamlet places the characters in an environment of shattered glass opposed to a realistic castle in Denmark. A stacked glass staircase, platform, and chandelier ground the scenes within the castle, while the downstage area features a gravesite which opens up to reveal a mossy underground. The abstract concept of the glass set design highlights the script's contrasting themes in an unconventional way. Appearance vs reality, madness vs sanity, truth vs deception all take on new visual context with the reflections and transparency of the glass, especially during Shakespeare's renowned soliloquies.
